Preferred family…
Many Dandies live happily and amicably in families with young children, but because of their sensitive nature and loyalty to their owners misunderstandings can occur. They are more suitable for adult and teenage families. If a hunting dog were required a Dandie would be happy to oblige, as a latent natural instinct lies in the heart of most Dandies.
… Requirement of the house
Dandies are housedogs and need to live in the family home within the family circle. Their feelings can be deeply hurt if expelled to outside accommodation. A well-fenced section is essential.
Feeding
A normal good quality total food dog biscuit and/or dog roll adjusted to the growth pattern and dietary requirements of the dog. DO NOT FEED BONES with the possible exception of whole beef cannon bones occasionally. Do not feed brisket bones. If in doubt leave out! Raw vegetables e.g., carrots, cabbage centres and even fruit are favoured fare of many Dandies.
Cure
Dandies need brushing and combing thoroughly at least twice a week paying particular attention to the areas under the front legs in summer where seed heads become imbedded. The topknot should be brushed upwards and trimmed about the eyes. Stripping once or twice a year is desirable. Particular attention should be paid to the hair inside the ears; this should be removed carefully with tweezers. Nails should be kept trimmed and excess hair cleared between the pads.
Education
A kind but totally firm hand is required for basic training in the first 12 months, and who is boss of the household firmly established. Some Dandies have been trained to obedience work. They certainly have the necessary intelligence but are not an ideal breed for obedience. Like most small terriers they are more intent on their own more important pursuits in life, and can go deaf on purpose if the occasion requires it!
Life with the Dandie
A good park or country walk, near some sort of water for preference is a Dandies delight. Pavement walking around the block on a leash is not his idea of fun, or indeed adequate exercise for a fit young dog. Beaches are good fun and many Dandies enjoy playing ball.
Problems of health
Glaucoma has been listed as latent in the breed and responsible breeders are constantly screening their stock. To date no known cases have been found in the bloodlines presently in New Zealand. A hindquarter weakness is present in some bloodlines. Dandies are particularly intolerant of excessive heat and care should be taken that they do not become overheated in the summer months.
Councils
If it is not accustomed living in a family where there are of the cats, to the occasion the Dandie can become a hunter much determined one, if it is not discouraged with firmness. The cuccioli have always a strong instinct for… the diggings also in the prati ones!.
